Spring, asparagus and zucchini...

Last friday, in the end of the afternoon, I was just back from the local supermarket with an empty basket, depressed from the lack of choice and determined not to cook that night when my dutchie called: his father was paying us a surprise visit... He had something to celebrate! Good timing as I had prepared my dish for the next Blog Apetit event! It was perfect for a celebration and I would have two guinea pigs instead of one! I won't get into details about it now (I will tell you about it on the 23rd of may). However, I can tell... [Lire la suite]

Under the sun, at last!

Sun in the netherlands is something you should not fail to enjoy... as it will not always be there! For the last 10 days, it has been sunny and warm and I did enjoy it, hence the lack of posts on this blog. The thermometer generously  exceeding the twenties, I finally found the courage to clean up my garden which had become more like a war field. After work, I could not avoid the sunny and crowded cafe terasses in the center of the city or at the beach for a rest in the sun and a white and fresh Hoegaarden while chatting... [Lire la suite]

Morrocan style mackerel!

Smoked mackerel is one of the food delicacies in holland. Often, on "fish days" at our cantine (wednesday) I treat myself with a Mackerel broodje*... The last time I was at the market, I realised that I had never tried cooking fresh mackerel. I decided to give it a try. I chose a couple of small mackerels that I could easily accomodate for lunch. The next day, I improvised my first mackerel for a quick lunch: morrocan style, in a papillotte. Not bad at all for a first, the seasoning did marvels to the mackerel and reminded... [Lire la suite]

Help! I burned my "cocotte" Staub

I am definitely new to food blogging! Since I started this blog a few weeks ago, my kitchen is undergoing a revolution.... and I am loosing control! Apart from the everlasting mess due to my numerous tryouts in my small dutch kitchen, and the eating cold due to the food photo sessions (ask my dutchie about that!), the worst has now happened... Last week, I was enjoying the newly discovered joys of blogging while my stew was simmering quietly in the kitchen. Life was great! But then, I forgot about the time, and the stew... My... I love squids... but would you clean them for me?

Last saturday, 2. p.m, at the crowded local market: I am standing exhausted among the fish stalls, my shoulders hurt from all the bags I'm carrying. I have everything I need for a whole week of fresh season vegetables and fruits. Unfortunately, the asperges have not appeared on the stalls yet... but I got fragrant deep red strawberries and a juicy mango instead. The fish looked amazing that day: after a lot of hesitation, I decided for a beutifully fresh sea bar, some mackerels. There is also that fish: "Wijting"... [Lire la suite]

Lekker*!

I admit it: I am a food obsessed frenchy! If you get me started on food, I can go on for hours. When I visit a country I am always looking forward to taste the local delicacies. And food shopping is always a must. However, since I first set foot in the Netherlands, I have never stopped complaining about the food (for my defence: dutch food is a common source of complaint for most of the foreigners, tourists, expats or immigrants in this country).... and I think I always will (at least a little).  I remember, during my first... Moroccan greens...

It is about two years since I last went to Morocco. I didn't realise how much I missed it until I stepped out of the plane in casablanca airport. I had never been there in spring before. I was very happily surprised Morrocco in spring is more beautiful than ever: It is warm and sunny, and calm. The flowers are more colourful and fragrant than ever, it's already warm enough for the still empty beaches and the old medina is not packed with red tourists in shorts and sandals. Several times during these five short days, I felt I could... [Lire la suite]

Saturday night "fever"...

Yesterday afternoon, I left my man at home while I went ahead for a crazy shopping afternoon. To compensate for my late return (long after all the shops had closed), I brought back a few delicacies for a romantic diner a deux. In my shopping basket were among others some guinea fowl and a dozen dutch oysters from Zeeland. I entered the house like a tornado looking forward to show off my discoveries to my man,... only to found him lying on the couch, a plaid on his shoulders, looking back at me slowly with feverish eyes: "........ Live from "L'autre pays du fromage"

I am a french girl living in the Netherlands, a country we familiarly call "l'autre pays du fromage" in france (no, we french are not food oriented chauvinists...). My diploma in hand, I have deserted my country more than five years ago now, full of ambitions and dreams of european citizenship... After some time, the rain , the too-pragmatic-and-too-tall dutch guys and the strange food got me thinking if this was really a country for a little girl from the south like me. That was until I found my own... [Lire la suite]
